What Goes Into Your Blue Bin

Blue Bin containers are picked up curbside every other week the same day as trash pick up. The following items will be picked up in your blue bin.

  • Glass - clear, green and brown glass bottles and jars.
  • Plastic - only containers with #1 or #2 in the triangle on the bottom.
  • Metal - aluminum and tin cans.
  • Newspaper - must be flat, clean and tied with string or in a brown paper bag and placed on top of the blue bin.
  • Junk Mail and Magazines - are now acceptable mixed in with your newspaper in your blue bin.

-Note-

All items must be rinsed and clean, discard all caps in regular trash. Discard broken glass to avoid injury to handlers. Plastics bags are not blue bin recyclable. They jam the equipment at the recycling plant.

If your Blue Bin is lost or Damaged, replacement bins can be obtained at The Highways and Bridges Department. There is a fee of $6.00 for additional or replacement Blue Bins.

Latex paint is not hazardous. To dispose of it, pop the cap and let it dry out. Once it is totally dry it can be discarded in the regular trash. Latex in liquid form is not acceptable because the cans open in the compactor.

Leaf Collection

2007 Curbside leaf collection Schedule
The City Leaf Compost Site located on Willoughby Road, next to Elizabeth Shelton School, will be open October 23rd through December 16th for leaf collection. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. and on Saturday 7:00 a.m. - Noon.

The compost site will be closed November 12th, 22nd and 23rd.

The first curbside collection will be done the week of November 12th through November 16th .

The Second and last bagged leaf collection will be the week of December 10th through December 14th.

Leaves should be placed at the curb on your regular trash collection day. Please be sure to keep leaf bags apart from your regular trash. Leaves will only be collected in BROWN PAPER BIODEGRADABLE BAGS.
Paper bags for leaf collection may be obtained year round at the Highways and Bridges Dept. located at 41 Myrtle St., Monday through Friday between the hours of 7:00 am and 2:30 pm. The cost is 2 bags for $1.00. Starting October 1st, paper leaf bags will also be on sale at the Plumb Memorial Library, Shelton Community Center, the City Clerk’s office and the Shelton Transfer Station.
