Our local government is responsible for operating and administering the business and affairs of the City. Our Mayor-Aldermanic form of government operates under a City Charter, revised in 1994. It consists of an executive branch: the Office of the Mayor and a legislative branch: the Board of Aldermen. The Board of Apportionment and Taxation is also elected to help prepare the City's annual budget and to award bids. Office of the Mayor The Mayor is the Chief Executive Officer of the City and is elected for a term of two years. He is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day administration and operation of all city departments as well as planning for Shelton's future needs. All administrative and department heads report directly to the Mayor. He is also responsible for preparing an Annual Fiscal Report and Annual Budget. Mark A. Lauretti, Mayor The Board of Aldermen The Board of Aldermen is the legislative body and the fiscal authority of the City. It consists of eight members elected for two-year terms; with two chosen from each of the City's four voting wards. The Board of Aldermen hold regular monthly meetings on the second Thursday of the month. They also have three standing committees ... Finance, Street and Public Safety. The Board has the authority to create and/or amend existing ordinances of the City. The Board of Aldermen sets the annual budget and the mill rate for the City. Members serve without compensation. The Board has a Clerk who can be reached daily in City Hall. The Board of Apportionment and Taxation The Shelton Board of Apportionment and Taxation is an elected board composed of three members from each of the major political parties (Republican & Democrat). They participate in the annual budget development process having a key role meeting with departments, reviewing budget requests and making a recommendation to the Board of Aldermen concerning their suggested budget and mill rate for the City and their recommended changes regarding fiscal matters. The Board of Apportionment and Taxation reviews budgeted revenues and expenditures and is authorized to make departmental line item transfers |
